Why can't I download PDF files from SpringerLink or Nature when using Google Chrome?

Answer

SpringerNature has alerted us that some users report problems downloading article PDFs from Nature and SpringerLink journals in Google Chrome.

If you encounter this problem, SpringerNature suggests trying the following workarounds:

1. Change Chrome's settings to download PDFs (rather than viewing in the browser):

  • Open Settings in Chrome (three vertical dots in the upper right corner).
  • Go to Privacy and Security on the left.
  • Click Site Settings (fourth item in list).
  • Scroll down (Additional content settings) and click on PDF documents.
  • Turn on Download PDF files instead of automatically opening them in Chrome.

2. Or, if using Chrome without changing settings:

  • Open the article
  • Right-click on the Download PDF button.
  • Choose Save link as… This will download the file to your computer/laptop.
  • Locate the downloaded file and open it.

3. Switch to an alternative web browser such as Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
